Mercedes-Benz Trucks is the only vehicle manufacturer to use the unit pump system (UPS) in its heavy-duty vehicles. These systems are found in engines such as the OM501LA, OM502LA, OM457LA, OM904, OM906, and OM460LA.
It guarantees high pressures of up to 2000 bar. In our African environment, with a very high sulfur content in fuel (over 1500 PPM compared to 50 PPM in the West, for example), the unit pump system offers the following advantages:
1. It is more resistant to poor fuel quality than other types of electronic injection.
2. Each pump operates independently. Damage to one pump does not automatically cause damage to the other.
3. For a V6 engine, for example, even with 3 damaged pumps, it is possible for the truck to return to its base.
4. Maintenance and repair costs are lower.
5. Simple and quick replacement during maintenance. As a drawback, the unit pump system is more fuel-intensive. It consumes slightly more fuel than the other electronic injection systems we will see in the next lesson.
Unit pumps are available on the market in various brands and qualities. At KAS Trucks, we sell genuine BOSCH pumps. If you need unit pumps for your truck, please send us a WhatsApp message at +31629594211
